Campus & Community Involvement

Counseling on the Coast

In Spring 2017, faculty from the Counseling Department will join ACCEL in reaching out to students in Half Moon Bay and Pescadero via workshops. Included in the line-up are sessions on career exploration, personality assessment and strategies for college success.

Math Support for Adult Students

In November 2016, ACCEL began piloting a student-centered approach to support adult learners in math at Sequoia Adult School. While currently only one student tutor is teaching math on a weekly basis, the goal is to form a team of students to support their peers in the South and Coast CATs.

Financial Literacy Training

On November 15, 2016, ACCEL staff received financial literacy training through United Way. Through this day long session, ACCEL staff are better prepared to address adult learners' financial concerns and refer them to appropriate services.

BDW: Unduplicated Enrollment

In Fall 2015, Spring 2016, Summer 2016 and Fall 2016, almost 200 adult students who had transitioned to college from Sequoia Adult School studied a combined load of just under 500 credits in the Business, Design and Workforce Division. Students enrolled in 13 disciplines.

COABE Virtual Conference

ACCEL hosted a virtual conference on October 26, 2016, for any members of the community to join. Session topics focused on support for adult-education through digital literacy, professional development, career readiness, mathematics, and ESL.

Sp16 Math Classes

In Spring 2016, just 4% of the study body who transitioned from Sequoia Adult School was enrolled in math. Upon closer analysis, the range of mathematics content suggests students' educational pursuits are well-beyond only ESL.

Support Adult-Ed Students at Cañada

Throughout October and November, ACCEL will conduct campus outreach by presenting at division, department and committee meetings. Through these presentations, the objective is to raise awareness of adult-ed students on campus and solicit support for their success as college students.

Coding Pathway

JobTrain, Sequoia Adult School, and ACCEL are in talks to adjust the curriculum for the coding pathway to provide graduates of the program with improved employment or educational opportunities.

DACA

To better support immigrant students, ACCEL has invited Maria Segarra to provide a legal overview about DACA and AB540 concerns.

ECE Jam

With over 900 students taking classes, the Early Childhood Education (ECE) team and ACCEL are strategizing how to encourage students interested in ECE to pursue not only a permit but a degree. Discussions have been initiated about piloting an ECE JAM to prepare students for success.

MIOT Intake

ACCEL collaborated with the ESL Department, Sequoia Adult School, and McKinley Institute of Technology to assess prospective ESL students in the Community Based English Tutoring (CBET) program. The intake process resulted in enrolling over 20 students eager to begin their ESL studies at McKinley.

AB540 Campus Resource Tour

On August 16, 2016, ACCEL initiated a campus resource tour specifically for students affected by AB540 legislation. Guided by a Cañada alum, tour attendees learned more about resources and allies supporting them in various departments on campus.

Career Skills JAM

Adapting the model of the Math JAM and Word JAM, the Career Skills JAM is designed to introduce students to soft business skills and applications essential to all professions. At the end of the three day series, students will receive an award and assistance in enrolling for classes at Cañada.

Human Services Program

Discussions between Cañada College and partner adult schools are in progress to explore forming a pathway in Human Services. Certificates in this field include Community Health Worker, Education Promoter, and Family Specialist.

Sequoia Adult School

Due to increased student enrollment at Sequoia Adult School, ACCEL will participate in student orientations and career explorations as requested.

Data Analysis of GED Students

Approximately 1/3 of GED graduates from Sequoia Adult School in the past two years were still unsure about what to study in college. ACCEL aims to guide students in making suitable career decisions.

Woman Learning in Computer

Despite high demand for computer literacy, CBOT courses face low enrollment and cancellation. ACCEL, the ESL Department, and the Business, Design and Workforce Division are devising how to integrate computer literacy into ESL curriculum.

Fall 2016 Flex Day Workshop

ACCEL co-facilitated a workshop in Fall 2016 to raise administrator, faculty and staff awareness on AB540 students' experiences in academics and how to support this population.
